Level up: Young World Travelers

A fun and space to learn about culture through food, art, and play

Young World Travelers is a weekly program for elementary school kids to explore different cultures in fun, hands-on ways. Each week, we focus on one culture and dive into activities like tasting new foods, doing simple art projects, listening to music, playing traditional games, or hearing stories from people in our own community who want to share about their culture. We highlight cultures that reflect the families and neighbors who live in our area, so kids can see themselves and each other in what they learn.

Each child gets a special passport to bring with them. After each session, they earn a stamp and can win small prizes by answering questions about what they learned. This helps them stay engaged and excited to come back.

 When: Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Where: 532 S Main Street, Lebanon, Oregon
Who: Open to all elementary-aged children.

Parents drop off and pick up.

Young World Travelers helps kids build confidence, empathy, and curiosity. It’s a fun way for them to learn about others, feel proud of who they are, and connect with new friends.

He connects with kids through movement, imagination, and joy, helping them feel comfortable and confident. Bear believes play is one of the best ways to build friendships and understanding, and he’s always ready to join in and cheer kids on. His playful spirit helps make Young World Travelers a place kids can’t wait to come back to.

Where culture comes to life through laughter and play.

Tortilla Day with Gaby

Kids had the chance to make fresh tortillas from scratch with Gaby. She shared memories of learning to make tortillas as a child with her mom and grandma, and talked about how important they are in her culture. Gaby explained how tortillas were made by hand before machines existed, and how her grandmother would fold warm tortillas into little animal shapes as a treat for the grandkids.

Each child rolled their own dough and used a wooden tortilla press brought from Mexico to shape their tortilla.

Five Stone Game instructions

Five Stone is a game that originated in India but was adopted and played across all of Asia. In our club, we used beads wrapped in kids soft molding clay (to avoid injuries and breaking things) but this game can be played with origami pouches or 5 actual stones- somewhat uniform in size.

Zulu Symbols

Zulu people make up the largest ethnic group of South Africa. Zulu symbols can be seen all over, as they are seen on clothing, jewelry, art and painted outside of homes. This is the cheat sheet and we used to identify different symbols within pictures around South Africa and used their definitions to determine the messages the symbols are trying to depict.
